About

The Birth Cove began in 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta. We noticed a number of close friends and colleagues experiencing significant birth trauma related to care that wasn’t based on current evidence. We wanted to help close the gap between current routine practice and updated scientific research, both for prospective parents and for our peers in healthcare.

The Birth Cove is named after a baby girl who has always been very special to us. Her name conveys a strong sense of peace and stillness within stormy waters. This is our way of furthering her legacy.

Our Team

Sarah Rivera

Sarah has a Bachelor of Nursing degree, CISM certification (Critical Incident Stress Management), doula certification, and CAPPA Childbirth Educator certification. Sarah is an Evidence Based Birth® Instructor Emeritus. When she isn’t teaching, she works as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a busy local ER. Before that, she worked in a Level III NICU.

She’s also the mother of two amazing boys and married to her best friend. They have a very fat cat named Benji. She loves music and is a sucker for extra garlic baby dill pickles.

JEROME RIVERA

Jerome is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) who has worked in the NICU and currently specializes in High-Risk Pediatric Critical Care Transport. When he attended a birthing class with his wife, he found a passion for helping support partners become confident in their role in childbirth.

Hockey, running, woodworking, and video games take up most of Jerome’s spare time when he isn’t teaching or working. He loves being a dad to his two sons and enjoys a good chai tea.
